BIBLE SCHOOL EDITION – Nathan and Pastor Scott continue their series on salvation, revealing that Jesus’ redemption isn’t just about being set free from sin but being set free to live empowered by the Holy Spirit. They uncover how salvation restores humanity to its original design — living in partnership with God’s purpose and authority. SALVATION: OUR FREEDOM FROM…
Ephesians 2.1-10; James 4.4-10; Romans 8.1-2
Trusting Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection on our behalf frees us from the penalty of sin (the ultimate consequences of sin — separation from God and eternal death). Freeing ourselves from our habitual inclinations of unrighteousness and self-righteousness is impossible without the power of the Holy Spirit. We become bonded and addicted to these mindsets and behaviors, and it is only through the power of Jesus’ life and resurrection that we are free from:
- Separation from God and eternal death. (Ezekiel 18.1-32; Jeremiah 31.29-30)
- The influence of the enemy and the world. (Galatians 5.16-26; 1 John 2.15-17; 5.1-5)
- Unnatural habitually inclined desires. (Romans 1.24-25; 12.1-2; Colossians 3.9-10)
APPLICATION QUESTION(S):
What areas of your past do you seem to lack freedom — often these are things you try to keep hidden or avoid talking about because they bring up painful memories, shame, guilt, or cause anger, bitterness, or resentment?
SALVATION: OUR FREEDOM TO…
John 10.10; 3.36; Romans 6.17-23; Colossians 1.9-14; Titus 2.11-14
We often think of salvation as only being freedom from something. Trusting Jesus’ resurrection and the Holy Spirit’s empowerment frees us from the power of sin. Salvation also restores us back into relationship with the Father and living empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a free, joy-filled life. When we allow the Holy Spirit to empower us, we are free to:
- Love God and others. (John 14.23-24; 2 Corinthians 5.17-21; Colossians 3.12-17)
- Do good works. (Ephesians 2.10; 4.25-32; Colossians 1.9-14; John 15.1-11; 16.7-11)
- Live an abundant life. (John 3.36; Romans 6.5-7; 2 Corinthians 5.16-21)
APPLICATION QUESTION(S):
When tempted to doubt, sin, or rebel against God’s design, how do you trust the Holy Spirit to empower you to overcome those temptations?
ACTIVATION STEPS
From this study, prayerfully walk through the following steps:
STEP #1 – ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN FREED FROM (Romans 8.1-2)
Salvation is not just a future promise but a present reality. Naming these acknowledges the real ways in which Jesus has set us free. It helps us stop living as if they still define us.
Ask the Holy Spirit: What old habits, fears, or patterns of thinking am I still living under that You have already set me free from??
STEP #2 – EMBRACE WHAT YOU’VE BEEN FREED TO (Ephesians 2.10)
Freedom isn’t just an escape from sin — it’s an invitation into life with the Holy Spirit. Salvation restores our relationship with the Father and empowers us to love and live.
Ask the Holy Spirit: With whom or in what circumstance this week are You inviting me to live out my freedom in Jesus — through love, good works, and joy?
STEP #3 – ACTIVATE FREEDOM LIVING (John 10.10):
Freedom must be practiced; it is not a default or passive lifestyle. Each day, moment-by-moment, is a choice to live under the Spirit’s power rather than slipping back into old patterns of thought and behavior.
Ask the Holy Spirit: In light of the previous answer, what is one concrete step You want to empower me to take this week to walk in abundant life?
