1-Minute Reflection: Should I Stay or Walk Away?

I’ve had plenty of moments when something made me uncomfortable, and my first instinct was to get away from it (even if just mentally). I’ve also stayed in situations longer than I probably should have because I convinced myself that leaving meant I would look mean.

But I’ve learned that discomfort alone isn’t a reliable indicator of what I should do next.

Sometimes wisdom looks like staying — having the uncomfortable conversation, working through a disagreement, or taking responsibility for something I’d rather avoid. Other times, wisdom looks like stepping away — establishing a healthy boundary, recognizing an unhealthy situation, or acknowledging that continuing to engage isn’t necessarily helpful.

The challenge is that both decisions can feel uncomfortable. And I’ve discovered that reacting to discomfort isn’t the same as responding with discernment.

That’s why I’m learning to slow down, acknowledge what I’m feeling, and invite the Holy Spirit to help me recognize what’s actually happening before deciding what to do next.

This question has helped me clarify my responses: How am I engaging this situation — with wisdom and the Holy Spirit’s guidance, or am I simply reacting to feeling uncomfortable?

With hope,
Nathan
