STB117 | BSE | Romans 7: Flesh +/- Spirit | Cultivate Relationships
Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION - Nathan and Pastor Scott Frerking explore Romans 7, focusing on the tension of living under the law without the power of Jesus. They also discuss the hopeless cycle of striving to live good but without Christ and the freedom that comes only through living empowered by the Holy Spirit. — EPISODE CHAPTERS — (00:00) INTRODUCTION (05:03) ROMANS 7.1-12 (36:46) ROMANS 7.13-25 (57:11) ACTIVATION STEPS — EPISODE NOTES — ROMANS 7.1-12: WE ARE FREE FROM THE LAW & SIN Romans 7.1-3: The Marriage Example – if a woman joins herself with another man while her husband is alive, she is an adulterer. If the husband dies, she is free to marry another. • Romans 7.4-6: The Explanation – a person who trusts Jesus (the new husband) has died to the law and sin (the former husband) and is free to live by the Spirit. Romans 7.7-10: The Human Experience – Innocence/Ignorance (v.9: alive apart from the law) → Revelation (v.8, 9: “age of accountability”) moments of understanding consequences → Choosing Sin (v.10: self-reliance) → Rejection of a Dependence Upon God (v.10: Death). • Romans 7.11-12: How Sin Overtakes A Person – Sin (an external force; i.e., our enemy) deceives us by tempting us to live by the Law apart from God; the Law points to our dependence upon God but it becomes the means to reject God — the result of living by the Law alone can only end in death. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): What do you think Paul means when he says we are “dead to the Law” (Romans 7.4, 6)? ROMANS 7.13-25: HOW SIN TRAPS US THROUGH THE LAW Romans 7.13-25: Our design (the law of God in our mind [v.25], “what I want to do” [v.15]) is overcome by our habitual inclinations (the law of sin in my flesh [v.25], “I do what I hate” [v.15]). • This is a picture of a person who has not chosen Jesus — they are continually in conflict with how God designed them to operate (i.e., dependent upon the Holy Spirit). It is contradictory to believe this is a believer’s battle in light of everything Paul has said in chapter 6; that is, Christians are dead to sin and the Law. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): What’s the main difference you see between Romans 6 (v.6-7) and 7 (v.13-25)? What might this mean for both the Christian and the non-Christian? ACTIVATION STEPS From this study, prayerfully walk through the following steps: STEP #1 - RECOGNIZE THE STRUGGLE (Romans 7.13-25): Without the Holy Spirit, unbelievers are powerless to overcome sin. Their struggle is real and inescapable without Jesus. Ask the Holy Spirit: How have I been quick to judge __________ [insert the name of a non-Christian or someone uninterested or seemingly unworthy of Jesus] in light of their struggle? STEP #2 - RESPOND WITH GRACE (Romans 7.24-25a): The Law can only reveal sin and enslaves us to death, but only Jesus brings grace that frees us to life. Ask the Holy Spirit: How can I show __________ specific grace and compassion in light of their struggle? STEP #3 - SHARE YOUR JESUS-STORY (Romans 7.4): Rather than debating morality (good vs bad behaviors), we can share how Jesus freed us and why we trust him. Ask the Holy Spirit: How can I be appropriately vulnerable with __________ about how Jesus set me free and how I live victorious? — EPISODE LINKS — • Unseen Realm by Dr. Michael Heiser: https://a.co/d/22jvfVm • Supernatural by Dr. Michael Heiser: https://a.co/d/hDeIZdJ • Website & Resources: https://cultivaterelationships.com53 views -
STB116 | BSE | Romans 6: Set Free from Sin | Cultivate Relationships
Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION - Nathan and Pastor Scott Frerking explore Romans 6, emphasizing that we are truly dead to sin but still have a choice of lordship—either sin (rebellion) or obedience (Jesus). They discuss the reality that we are always bearing fruit, and the type of fruit reveals whom we have been serving. — EPISODE CHAPTERS — (00:00) INTRODUCTION (06:41) ROMANS 6.1-14 (51:58) ROMANS 6.15-23 (1:03:50) ACTIVATION STEPS — EPISODE NOTES — ROMANS 6.1-14: WE ARE DEAD TO SIN... REALLY? Those of us who have received Jesus (as Savior and Lord) consider ourselves dead to sin — sin no longer has a draw or hold on us (Romans 6.2). Our habitual inclinations are rendered powerless when we live in Jesus (through his Spirit) (Romans 6.6). • See also 1 John 2.1; Galatians 2.20; 5.24. Romans 6.12-14 – Our weapons (our physical bodies) reveal who our master is: • The enemy and the kingdom of darkness to spread unhealthy relational living. • Jesus and the kingdom of light to spread healthy relational living. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): If salvation is more than just forgiveness — if it actually involves dying to an old, unhealthy way of thinking and behaving — how should that reshape the way we think about grace, sin, and discipleship? ROMANS 6.15-23 - CHOOSE YOUR LORD: SIN (REBELLION) OR OBEDIENCE We are designed to produce fruit — fruit is present no matter what. However, what we serve reveals what we trust and determines the kind of fruit we will produce: • If sin, we exponentially develop more sin leading to death (relational, emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual). • If obedience, we exponentially develop sanctification (purity and life). • See also Matthew 6.24; John 8.34; 2 Peter 2.17-19; Galatians 5.16-24. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): What masters (think: fears, worries, anxieties, or doubts) compete for your attention and affection? These can often be identified by who and what we try to control and what occupies our thoughts, time, and attention. ACTIVATION STEPS From this study, prayerfully walk through the following steps: STEP #1 - ASSESS YOUR FRUIT (Romans 6.20-23): The fruit (our own physical, emotional, or mental outcomes) can often reveal the source of our words and actions. Take a moment to reflect on the past week. Ask the Holy Spirit: When or with whom do I feel powerless, out of control, or a victim? When or with whom have I lacked healthy fruit (think: joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, or self-control, etc.)? Why were these attributes not present in that moment? STEP #2 - ENTRUST YOURSELF TO YOUR HEAVENLY FATHER (Romans 6.13): Our words and actions reveal who we trust — either God or not God. Ask the Holy Spirit: What lies have I believed about God that have led me to this unhealthy fruit? STEP #3 - SUBMIT & SERVE YOUR TRUE MASTER (Romans 6.22): You are designed to bear fruit in line with your Heavenly Father’s character. This week, whenever you feel fear, worry, anxiety, or doubt, ask the Holy Spirit: What does it look like to trust and submit to You in this moment? — EPISODE LINKS — • Website & Resources: https://cultivaterelationships.com188 views -
STB115 | BSE | Romans 5: Choices Matter | Cultivate Relationships
Cultivate RelationshipsBIBLE SCHOOL EDITION - Nathan and Pastor Scott Frerking discuss Romans 5 and how faith in Jesus requires risk, maturity, and endurance. We also share how sin is anything in opposition to our nature or design, that is, living as the image and likeness of God. — EPISODE CHAPTERS — (00:00) INTRODUCTION (21:42) ROMANS 5.1-11 (42:52) ROMANS 5.12-21 (1:01:26) ACTIVATION STEPS — EPISODE NOTES — ROMANS 5.1-11 - FAITH-FILLED SUFFER + RECONCILIATION WITH THE HEAVENLY FATHER = HOPE OF SALVATION In this section they discuss how faith in Jesus requires risk, maturity, and endurance — all brought about by suffering and opposition. They also discuss how Jesus sacrificed himself for our benefit before we wanted to benefit from him. The benefit was that through Jesus’ death reconciliation of relationship with the Father was made possible and that through his resurrection life restoration of our human design and our dependence upon the Holy Spirit was revealed. APPLICATION QUESTION(S): Think about the times you’ve shown love and forgiveness to someone you deemed undeserving or uninterested. What does this reveal about how you believe God loves and forgives you? ROMANS 5.12-21 - ADAM V. JESUS In this section they discuss how sin is not simply a list of rules (“the Law”). Sin is anything in opposition to our nature or design; that is, living as the image and likeness of God. The Law simply revealed how we were missing the mark. We accept the gift (Jesus) the same way we accept the transgression (Adam): 1) choose to believe → 2) trust in what we believe → 3) actions empowered by what we trust. However, the fruit of these choices is vastly different — either life (Jesus) or death (Adam). APPLICATION QUESTION(S): When do you find it easier to rely on your own thoughts and conclusions instead of seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance and strength in a situation? ACTIVATION STEPS Take some time this week to prayerfully work through the following steps in light of Romans 5.1-21: STEP #1 - IDENTIFY THE SOURCE Take a moment to reflect on your daily choices. Are they rooted in an agreement with Adam’s self-reliance or in an agreement with Jesus’ righteousness? Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where you might be operating out of fear, self-sufficiency, or wrong beliefs rather than trusting the Holy Spirit. STEP #2 - SHIFT YOUR TRUST Just as death entered through a belief in a lie, life comes through belief in the truth. Tell Jesus (out loud) about a specific circumstance where you are struggling. Ask Jesus what his perspective and truth is about that circumstance. STEP #3 - WALK IN ALIGNMENT Ask the Holy Spirit to give you one intentional action you can take that reflects the truth of what Jesus spoke over your circumstance. Whether it is extending grace to someone, surrendering control, or stepping out in faith, let your actions flow from the truth that you are live in Christ AND empowered by His Spirit. — EPISODE LINKS — • Romans Series: https://rumble.com/playlists/We4ZwUDQLuY • Galatians Series: https://rumble.com/playlists/LQ6jwwUgzjw • Forgiveness Series: https://rumble.com/playlists/fRimChMNK1M • Website & Resources: https://cultivaterelationships.com153 views -
