God Told Me…

In Bible school, I had a friend who claimed that God told him he would marry at least five different women during his time there. Coming from a conservative church background (where I was never really taught how to hear God’s voice), his week-to-week “revelations” didn’t exactly build my confidence that God actually spoke.

Almost 25 years later, and after 21 years of marriage, I’ve realized that hearing God’s voice is actually a lot like being married. At first, I thought I understood my wife pretty well. And while I can usually read her now, she’s still full of surprises. Relationship takes time, trust, and daily practice.

Hearing God works the same way. It’s not about getting it perfect — it’s about growing in relationship.

Here are a few things I’ve learned about hearing God’s voice and learning to walk with Him:

Pray Specific Questions.
Instead of “God, bless me today,” try, “Holy Spirit, what is the most important thing I need to do right now?” Specific questions and needs will invite specific responses from Him.

Reword Your Questions.
If you don’t sense a response, ask again differently. Just like in a conversation, sometimes the way you phrase something matters. It’s not that you’re trying to get God to understand. He’s actually teaching you vulnerability, intentionality, and dependence.

Address each person of the Trinity.
Pray to the Father as a loving parent, to Jesus as a friend and brother, and to the Spirit as counselor and guide. They are real persons, not abstract ideas, and shifting your focus can open new ways of hearing. I have often changed from praying to the Father to Jesus, or from the Holy Spirit to the Father. And I have found that depending upon who I pray to, I receive either a “blank stare” or an expedient response.

Trust Your First Impression.
The first thought, word, or picture that comes right after you pray is often God’s response. His voice usually sounds a lot like your inner thoughts, but steadier, kinder, and always consistent with Scripture.

Hearing God isn’t about mastering a formula. It’s about trusting that He wants to be heard even more than you want to hear Him. This week, start here: “Father, what do You want me to know about You today?”

Then trust that His answer may be closer than you think.

God bless,
Nathan
