Selling Life Insurance to Dead People is Dumb

I have several friends who work in sales — car salesmen, realtors, insurance agents, and cybersecurity. Their job is all about finding the right audience and making a compelling pitch. I can’t imagine how I would respond if one of them came to me and said, “I’ve discovered the perfect clientele — people who will never argue, never walk away, or hang up the phone. I’m heading to a cemetery, setting up a table, and selling [cars, property, life insurance, or security software] to those buried there.”

Absolutely absurd, right? No matter how good my friends are at selling, dead people can’t buy anything. And yet, that’s exactly how sin treats Christians. It keeps trying to sell us its lies — as if we were still capable of buying them. But in Christ, we are dead to sin and alive to God (Romans 6.11). Sin has no power over us… unless we choose to listen. So how do we remain alive as a new creation and dead to the enemy’s salesmen?

Take Every Thought Captive
Sin starts as the enemy’s whispers (temptations) to our mind before it ever becomes a motive, word, or action. The moment destructive thought creeps in, recognize it and reject it. “We are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Corinthians 10.5).

Ask the Holy Spirit for the Next Step
Victory over sin isn’t about willpower — it’s about surrender. Instead of just trying harder, ask the Holy Spirit for a practical step to take in the moment. “Walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh” (Galatians 5.16).

Build Healthy, Spirit-Led Habits
Right living isn’t just avoiding sin — it’s actively choosing what leads to life. Shape your days around God’s presence and His ways. “Do not go on presenting the parts of your body to sin… but present yourselves to God as those who are alive from the dead” (Romans 6.13).

This week, ask yourself: Am I living like a new creation, or am I still acting like my old self?

Sin has no power over you, so stop listening to its sales pitch!

God bless —
Nathan
