I’ve often wondered what it would have been like to physically walk alongside Jesus. To hear him teach, ask him questions, and watch how he interacted with people. I imagine it would have made following him so much easier.
But apparently, Jesus had a different perspective. In John 16.7, he told his disciples, “It is for your good that I am going away”.
I’ve had to think about this. Jesus actually told the people who had spent years walking beside him that his departure would be to their advantage! Why?
Because he would send the Holy Spirit.
Sometimes I wonder how seemingly disappointing that promise is — as though the Holy Spirit were merely a consolation prize for those of us who missed the opportunity to walk with Jesus.
But Jesus was describing something even better: the Spirit of God dwelling within us, guiding, teaching, and empowering us wherever we go.
This promise has challenged me to reconsider: Am I living as though I missed the opportunity to walk with Jesus, or am I learning to recognize and trust the Holy Spirit who is already with me?
With hope,
Nathan
