Peloton bikes are great — if your goal is to spend thousands of dollars to sweat buckets while also not going anywhere. But if you actually want to go somewhere, give me a motorized bike any day. Seriously, why would I pedal like Lance Armstrong without steroids trying to win the Tour de France, yet literally go nowhere when I could ride an electric-powered bike around town with the optional seat backrest and front/rear baskets to carry by computer bag and groceries? (hypothetically speaking, of course.)
Yet, that’s exactly how so many of us live — striving, pushing, and exhausting ourselves while trying to be “empowered” by success, attraction, money, marriage, kids, health, food, or achievements. It might look like progress (read: “success”), but it’s just pressure without real movement (read: “maturity” or “fulfillment”). The truth is, real fulfillment comes from living how we were designed — sacrificially dependent on the Holy Spirit. This isn’t a flaw; it’s what actually makes life work and brings us the most peace and joy.
So how do we shift from self-effort to Spirit-powered living?
Recognize What’s Draining You
What are you relying on to feel strong, secure, or fulfilled? If it’s anything other than God, it will eventually leave you empty. “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh provides no benefit” (John 6.63).
Shift Your Dependence to the Holy Spirit
Stop trying to fuel yourself with things that can’t sustain you — including definitions of success. Instead, invite the Holy Spirit to take control of your desires, decisions, and direction. “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord of armies” (Zechariah 4.6).
Walk Daily in His Power
Living by the Spirit isn’t a one-time decision; it’s a daily reliance. Surrender your plans and seek His presence first in all things. “If we live by the Spirit, let’s follow the Spirit as well” (Galatians 5.25).
This week, ask yourself: Where in my life do I feel like a spiritual Peloton — working hard but feeling unsuccessful or unfulfilled? What would it look like to let the Holy Spirit power my life in that area?
Life isn’t meant to be exhausting — it’s meant to be empowered.
God bless —
