1-Minute Reflection: Can You Forgive Without Trusting Again?

I’ve been on both sides of broken trust. I’ve been hurt by people I cared about, and I’ve made choices that deeply hurt people I love. And through those experiences, I’ve learned that forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration are connected — but they’re definitely not the same.

Forgiveness is something I can choose, even if the other person never takes responsibility.

Reconciliation requires both people to acknowledge what happened and consider moving toward one another again.

Restoration goes further because it involves rebuilding trust. One person must demonstrate trustworthiness through honesty, ownership, and consistent choices. The other must eventually be willing to provide an opportunity for trust to grow again.

Of course, that doesn’t mean ignoring what happened, abandoning healthy boundaries, or rushing the process.

But I think grace has a place in all three. Grace can forgive. Grace can make reconciliation possible. And grace can create opportunities for trust to grow again.

So the questions I’ve been thinking through are: How have I confused forgiveness with reconciliation or restoration? And what responsibility belongs to me in whatever comes next?

With hope,
Nathan
