1-Minute Reflection: Is This Really Mine to Carry?

I’ve been learning lately that not every uncomfortable situation requires the same response. Sometimes I need to stay engaged, even when everything inside me wants to shut down, avoid, or escape. Other times, I need to step back and recognize that something simply isn’t mine to fix or carry.

But recognizing the difference hasn’t always been easy.

I’ve spent plenty of time reacting to what’s happening around me without paying attention to what’s happening inside me. What am I feeling? Why is this affecting me so strongly? Why isn’t this affecting me at all when I know it should be? Am I trying to control something that isn’t my responsibility?

Learning to slow down and ask these questions has helped me recognize that sometimes wisdom means leaning into an uncomfortable conversation. Other times, it means allowing someone else to take responsibility for their own choices.

Neither response is necessarily easier.

But I’ve discovered that practicing this kind of awareness and discernment is helping me experience greater mental and emotional unity — and with it, a surprising amount of peace, regardless of the outcome.

As I assess situations in my life, I’m discovering a greater sense of control by asking myself: What in this situation isn’t mine to own or take responsibility for? Regardless of who’s at fault, what do I actually have the power and responsibility to do?

With hope,
Nathan
